Ofcom has opened dozens of investigations and issued its first fines against non compliant sites, and the large majority of the most visited adult services now operate age assurance for UK users. Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office have jointly confirmed that age assurance can and must be delivered in a privacy preserving way, and are reporting publicly on its effectiveness. They have also extended the requirement for highly effective age assurance to the enforcement of 13 as the minimum age often specified in a site’s terms and conditions, and under Article 8 of GDPR which requires parental consent before a young child can give permission for their personal data to be processed.
