The [International Organization for Standardization ](https://www.iso.org/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener)accepted a proposal from the UK, supported by the [UK Government](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/standards-and-accreditation" target="_blank" rel="noopener) to define an ISO standard for age verification.
[ISO/IEC 27566-1](https://www.iso.org/standard/88143.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener)*– Age assurance systems: w*as published in December 2025. It establishes a framework for age-assurance systems, including their core privacy and security characteristics. Additional parts addressing methods and performance measurement remain under development.
 
Two further parts of the Standard will follow, addressing methods of age assurance, and their measurement.
