The Age Verification Providers Association, the global trade association for suppliers of age assurance technology, welcomed the preliminary findings of the Age Assurance Technology Trial, commissioned by the Australian Government.
Highlights from these initial conclusions include
- “Age assurance can be done in Australia”
- No substantial technological limitations
- A rich and rapidly evolving range of services which can be tailored and effective depending on each specified context of use
- A vibrant, creative and innovative age assurance service sector
- A strong commitment to privacy by design principles
- No discernible difference in the outcomes for First Nations and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and other multi-cultural communitiesDevelopers actively addressing known attack vectors including AI-generated spoofing and forgeries
There are of course lessons to learn from some of the detail in these observations, that our members will appreciate as feedback. We look forward to the Final Report in a few weeks’ time, which we will use to create an action plan to address any identified weaknesses across the age assurance industry.
Alastair Graham, Co-Chair of the AVPA said:
“This is the largest, government-sponsored, independent assessment of the sector’s solutions, including real-world testing of a statistically representative sample of Australia’s diverse population, and provides a strong endorsement of its capabilities.”
Julie Dawson, Co-Chair of the AVPA said:
“The trial will provide a wealth of evidence about the full range of age assurance methods, be they traditional verification or innovative estimation techniques. These early conclusions will give the public, regulators and legislators confidence to support measures that make the Internet safer for children, knowing there is the technical ability to implement them effectively.”
