AVPA showcases latest privacy-preserving age assurace technology

September 10, 2024

10 September 2024 Washington, DC – Members of the Age Verification Providers Association demonstrated a wide-range of privacy-preserving methods of online age assurance at an event designed to inform US policymakers and jurists about the capabilities of the technology, ahead of the Supreme Court considering whether to uphold a federal appeals court decision agreeing Texas could require age verification to prevent children accessing pornographic websites.

The event opened with presentations from experts who set out the legal questions before the Court.  Seven companies then demonstrated various aspects of the industry’s technical solutions:

  • Verifying Age online using physical ID documents
  • Matching images on ID to the user
  • Facial Age Estimation
  • Using selective disclosure of age from a Mobile Driving Licence
  • Processing document verification and facial age estimation entirely on a user’s own device
  • Using hand movements to estimate age
  • Confirming age based on a user’s history of using their email address

The event also covered International Standards – BSI PAS 1296, IEEE 2089.1 and ISO 27566 – and explained industry-wide initiatives to deploy an “AgeAware ecosystem” that enables  reusability, interoperability and cryptographically guaranteed “double blind” anonymity.
